Introductions, etc.

Today we talked about introductions and conclusions. I've also shown you some examples of speeches from my classes. However, there are lots of other speeches on the internet -- some follow our format, and some don't. To receive 15 quiz points (all or nothing), find a speech online that meets the following guidelines:

1. The speech must include an introduction.
2. The introduction must include at least 2 of the 3 parts of a good introduction (as covered in class).

To get the points follow these directions:

1. Once you find the speech, and paste the URL address into a blog comment.
2. List the 3 parts of a good introduction, and list whether or not the speaker has included each.
3. Tell us (in a sentence or two) what you think of the introduction -- is it good or bad?
4. Does the speech include transitions? What is the conclusion like? Is this speech a good example?

The 3 parts of a good introduction includes: attention getter, connection step, and a thesis. The speech that I found did include the attention getter by asking a question about caffeine. The connection step is where he talked about the study of caffeine and he did list the 3 main points he is going to inform in the speech.
I believe the introduction is good. He kept me interested just by reading it. He did have a transition from the introduction to the first point. In the conclusion, he revised his main 3 points and made a person think of how much caffeine they actually drink. I believe the speech is good. Based on the info we talked about in class and reading his speech, he should have did a transition from point 1 to point 2. Another from point 2 to point 3. The transition from point 3 to conclusion should have been better.

The three parts to a good introduction includes: the attention getter, connection step, and a thesis. The speech I found is over sleep deprivation. Her attention getter is asking her audience questions related to the topic. The connection step was saying that at atleast one point everyone there has most likely experienced sleep deprivation. Then she has a thesis statement telling 3 things she will talk about: what it is, the adverse affects it has on college students and what can be done to avoid it.
I think the introduction is good. She has some other information added into it that was a little much for an intro and made me feel lost.
The speech does include introductions. After her intro, she said, "Lets get started." She had a transition between almost every point. The conclusion didn't restate what all she had talked about. It was still good but it didn't remind me of all the points she talked about.
I think the speech was a good example. She did a pretty good job and I liked her topic.

This speech has a great intro and includes all three parts to good introduction. The attention getter really gets you ready to hear where she is going with her topic. The connection step ties everything she is saying about Georgia and their concealed weapon issue. The thesis is very well formatted and had you ready to be informed on her topic. As a whole I thought that was one of the best introductions I have ever heard in a speech. The transitions in the speech are great. The conclusion was very smooth and left you with good information to consider. I thought this speech was a great example for an overall great speech .

This speech had a good introduction. It also contained the three parts of a good introduction. The attention getter was my favorite overall part. The connection fits well with her topic and her thesis statement does tell me what she is going to talk about. The speakers speech did inform me of Autism but was very distracting with her pictures and at one point the whole screen is filled with a graph you can barely see with the speaker humming in the background. The speaker had no transitions which at times made it hard to tell what she had moved on to, main point wise. The conclusion was bad. The speaker added more facts and had a persuasive ending. I thought this was a bad example of a speech.

The three part of a good introduction are the attention getter, the connection step and the thesis. I thought she did a good job of getting the audiences attention and connecting the subject matter to the audience that she is targeting. She did use one transition that I was able to clearly tell but she really went from point to point without really making it clear that she was going on. The conclusion was there but she didn't really review what she had told the audience more or less she just moved forward into the ending without any warning. Overall I wasn't real impressed with the speech because her movements were kind of distracting due to rocking back and forth and she seemed way rehearsed.

She starts with story, and then the 2x3 thesis. She has good transitions point to point. On her conclusion she fails to summarize the main points.

The three parts of a good introduction are, the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. I think the introduction was okay, he did do all three parts of the introduction. Some of his transitions were not very plain to me at all times. The conclusion was there and he restated his thesis. Overall, it was just okay. He umed a lot and mumbled. I thought this was a not the best example for a speech.

the three parts of a good introuduction consist of the thesis statement, 3 main points must be clear, and attention getter. She didnt really have much transactiond, but i choose it because i thought she was very original. Her conclusion was good she explains her three points ones again

Attention getter(Hook), Connection sentence(step), Thesis (2x3)
Her speech was very good. Great hook, great connection, thesis was not 2x3 and was blended in almost seamlessly with her speech. Excellent transitions. Conclusion, again, not in our format and a little lengthy.Over all she did a wonderful job speaking. The speech was hard to break down into specific parts although the major parts were apparent. Okay example for class, excellent example any other time.

The 3 parts to a good introduction is Attention Getter, Connection sentence, and Thesis. This speech has an attention getter and a broken up thesis. Her conclusion was short and to the point, only one sentence long. She should have spent a little more time on her conclusion and a little less time on her introduction. Its an OK example the introduction is a little lengthy.

The three parts of a good sentence are attention getter, connection step, and a thesis. The speech had a great introduction, but did not follow the 10%-15% model given exactly. The speech was hilarious and got the job done. It had some great transactions and a good story/joke. The conclusion is just priceless; the speech was great and could was obviously well prepared for and organized well.

The three parts of a good introduction is an attention getter, connection step, and a thesis statement. The speech I found had a good introduction and followed all three parts of the good aspects. The transitions were smooth and fluent, and the conclusion did a good job of tying everything back together. Overall the speech was well planned and creative.

The three parts of a good introducion is an attention getter, connection step, and a thesis statment. The speech I have posted covers all three of these. The attention getter kept you wondering what his speech was going to cover, his conclusion was well spoken, but the connection step could have been a bit more clear. I believe the introduction was well thought out. Overall the intoduction was good.

The three parts of a good introduction includes: attention getter, connection step, and a thesis. The speech that I posted starts off with a story as a attention getter. The connection step was a there, but there was not thesis statement untilthe end of the speech. She is a well spoken and informative throughout the speech.

I thought this was a good introduction speech. She did a good job of continuing to look up from her paper and try to keep eye contact with the audience. The three parts of a good introduction includes: attention getter, connection step, and a thesis. I think she accomplished all three.

A good speech would have an attention getter, a connection step, and a thesis. This speech uses a quote about friends to get everyones attention. Her connection step is not really solid but I recognize it when she tells the audience she is going to talk about three things that make her happy just as everyone has things that makes them happy. Her thesis does not include the three point method(I think she got nervous and skipped it because she does the three point method in her conclusion). This speaker touches on all three aspects of a good speech but does not do any of them to stellar abilities.

A speech should start out with an attention getter, a connection step and end with a thesis. This speech starts out with personal story about his past life and relates himself to the crowd. This story covers the attention getter and the connection step. After that he moves on to stating a thesis about taxes and debt. He has a great intro that moves right into the American Spirit. He sorta uses transitions. At some times he just moves right into the next point. Also has a good ending, and the only missing part is the summary of what he talked about in the speech.

The 3 parts of an introduction are 1) attention getter, 2) Connection step, and 3) thesis. This particular speech includes a statistic as the attention getter, a connection step, and his thesis about past car-theft devices, present car-theft deivices, and future devices. Personally, i think it was a good intro. While it was basic, it did include all the necessary requirments of an intro. His transitions are a little iffy, though and the conclusion is very brief. There's no wrap around to the intro, no review of main points, and there's not really a signal of ending.
Over all, i'd say that even though the intro is pretty decent, this isn't a speech someone should model their own after.

The three parts of an introduction are the attention getter, connection step, and thesis. The speaker includes all three of these in this speech. He grabs your attention by asking if you are a caffeine addict, connects it to his topicand presents his speech.I think the introduction is good because it contains the 3 parts of a good introduction and it was interesting. The speech only includes one transition and it is between the introduction and the first main point. The conclusion is lacking there is no review of the main points at all. This speech contains some good aspects of an informative speech but overall it is lacking a few things that could make it better.

The three parts of the introduction are the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. The speaker in the speech includes all three of these parts. She begins the speech with an attention getter that is a strong statement that grabs the audience's attention and relates to them by saying "We have all faced this troubling reality:sweat." The connection step is included when asks the audience "Is there a purpose behind all the discomfort that sweat can cause?" She also includes the thesis statement by clearly stating the three main points of her speech which are why we sweat, how we sweat, and how it can be controlled. I think that overall the speaker had a very strong introduction and covered the three main points of a good introduction for a speech.

The three parts of a good introduction are, the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. This guy had all three. The "I'm a Millionare" quote at the beginning of the speech was the attention grabber. His three goals wet the connection step from the attention grabber to the actual contents of the speech. His thesis which also had a visual aid connected to it (with the three objects) was very well thought out. Also, the visual aid was a good choice to match perfectly with the contents of the thesis. His transitions and conclusions were both spoken very smoothly and connected well with the body of the speech.

The 3 parts of a good introduction are the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. I personally like the speech and I think he had included all 3 points in his speech. He got the audience's attention by apologizing the disturbance of regular TV channels and connected with the audience by telling similarity between the audience and himself then make the audience remember about 11/5. Finally he speaks about his point of view and the importance of 11/5. The conclusion part was fairly good by strongly addressing his ideas and tell the audience to join him, but I think he did not have transitions. Therefore, despite the lack of transitions, this speech had a good introduction and I was able to understand clearly what he wanted to insist.

The three parts of an introduction are the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. She includes all three in her speech. Her attention getter was the story about the dog along with the picture. This was a very good way to set up her introduction. Overall her introduction was very good. She does use transition to and from her main points. Then her conclusion does a very good job of wrapping up the whole speech.

The speech gives two of the three parts of an introduction. Her attention getter appeals to the emotions of her listeners. The three parts of an intro is attention getter, connection step, and thesis. the speaker includes the attention getter and connection step. The introduction is pretty good. She has a good attention getter and gives the audience an overview of the movie Taken. The speech does include transitions. The conclusion gives the audience a good wrap up.

I think this is a good example of a speech with a good introduction. The person giving the speech begins with "I'm a millionaire," which is clearly untrue but it acts as an attention getter and causes audience members to pay attention to him and it interest them to hear an explanation. Then he goes on to explain that he isnt literally a millionaire by saying the amount of dollars that he must acquire before reaching that goal. Also, he has three objects on the table in front of him, each one represents a different aspect of his life. This acts as thee speech givers topic sentence, providing the three main points that he will focus on later in his speech. He uses very simple transitions, but they are effective and serve the purpose of leading from one topic into another. His conclusion is very effective because he refers back to his thesis statement and talks briefly about how the three main ideas are and how he hopes that they will be in the future.
