Introductions, etc. (Evening)

Today we talked about introductions and conclusions. I've also shown you some examples of speeches from my classes. However, there are lots of other speeches on the internet -- some follow our format, and some don't. To receive 15 quiz points (all or nothing), find a speech online that meets the following guidelines:

1. The speech must include and introduction.
2. The introduction must include at least 2 of the 3 parts of a good introduction (as covered in class).

To get the points follow these directions:

1. Once you find the speech, copy the address (URL) from your browser's address bar.
2. Create a new comment by clicking "Comments" under the title of this post.
3. Paste the URL into the comment box.
4. List the 3 parts of a good introduction, and list whether or not the speaker has included each.
5. Tell us (in a sentence or two) what you think of the introduction -- is it good or bad?
6. Does the speech include transitions? What is the conclusion like? Is this speech a good example?

This assignment is due by July 8th at 10:00 PM.

She had a good introduction -- Included thesis, statistics as well as attention getter for this persuasive speech.
She simply numbered her points rather than including transitions as a bridge between them.
Her conclusion was a good example because she mentioned each point and the response she hoped her audience would reach.

This is a speech by Gen. Douglar Mac Athur delivered to the grad. class of West Point in 1964. The speech itself is delivered by Gregory Peck from the movie "Mac Arthur." I've listened to both parties and Peck's Delivery is Awsome.
Main point; West Point/Millitary.
1) Duty 2)Honor 3)country, the speaker goes dirctly from the main topic to the 3 sub-topics discussing each. The intro. had my attention immediately, there were good transitions and the conclusion was very dinamic.

Strong introduction and thesis. Very informative and instructive therefor making it easy to follow.
Her conclusion was short but also stated back to what was mentioned in her opening.

The three main points of an introduction is the attention getter, the connection, and the two by three thesis. In this speech I belive that Sean includes an attention getter by claiming he is a millionaire and then explaining that he isn't quite yet, but he is on his way. He also includes a connection with the audience in the sense that he refferred to people as a whole when they set low goals for themselves so they wouldn't be disappointed if they don't reach them. He also gives a good thesis. It is in a different form than what we have discussed previously, but he explains what he is going to talk about and has three objects that he will later describe separately. His transitions could use some work, because they are more of the kind you would write in a paper not say in a speech. He did however, have a strong conclusion. He restated his attention getter from his intro, summed up the info he gave previously, and had a signal for the end. Overall I liked this speech. He did a good job.

The three parts of an introduction are the attention getter, the connection step, and the thesis. The speaker did have each item in the introduction, however he only had a partial thesis statement. He told us what he was going to talk about but failed to do the main point preview. The introduction was good but it lacked in the thesis department. I did hear one transition after the introduction, but I didn't catch any after that. His conclusion was sort of there but he didn't have all of the parts a conclusion should have. I don't think this was a very good example because he was missing a few main parts of the introduction and conclusion.

Three parts of a good introduction are an attention-getter, connection step, and a thesis statement.

I feel he grabbed my attention with “an old lab named Grandpa” and easily flowed from animal shelters to test facilities. His appeal to the audience “to suspend their moral judgement and listen to the facts” brings their thoughts back to listen to his three main points.

His conclusion to “think back to old Grandpa” from his attention-getter prepares both the pro and con listener to ponder the fate of test-lab animals. I thought it was a good “informative” persuasive speech. Tom Jarrett

He had an attention getter as a question, connection step and thesis statement. The question as the attention getter got everyone attention, you coud hear the class. I thought it was a good intro. it got my attention an it was interested how he had the question. There were transitions and the conclusion tied up the introduction. I thought it was a good example of a persuasive speech.

His intro starts with a little short story. Has his attention getter, connection step & 3 main points 1) Define what a hero is. 2) What it takes to be a hero. 3) How you and I can help rekindle the effects of heroism. Main point is Being a super hero.

I think it's a very good speech. He got my attention by saying that as a society we've kind of become self centered. Opens it up so he can tell you what he wants to tell you. His speech does include transitions. And it's like a motivational as to why we should be better people. His conclusion is strong, he touches base again with his main point, includes a wrap around finishing the speech nicely.
